Language Arts
Term 1: April to July
We have started this year with a different approach to our phonics unit. We will focus on phonics to give our students full exposure to the sounds of English and how to start reading by our fifth class. We do not use an A,B,C approach to learning the sounds of English. Our first five sounds will be s, a, t, i, p.
Term 2: September to December
In the second term we will focus on the 72 sight words or what we call tricky words that your child will need to learn as "Whole Words" in that the spelling differs in terms of what your child has learned to decode. Because these words appear frequently in English, it is important they come to be comfortable reading them as a whole. We will also be reviewing all of the digraphs learned in from April to July.
Term 3: January to March
In our final term we will be looking at alternate spellings for digraphs. The first digraph spelling our students learn is called their "Old Friend" spelling and the new spellings they learn for the same sounds are called "New Friend" spelling. We will test alternate spellings that students can prepare for, but we will also be testing sentence dictation that students can not prepare for.
